I had been curious as to what was taking the NFL so long to approve Sean Payton's new contract, since both sides agreed to terms in principle nearly two weeks ago.
We found out Wednesday, the NFL never approved the contract because they hadn't received a copy of it yet.
Clearly, Payton and the Saints were working on some minor details before he officially signed the contract. They finally ironed out all those details Wednesday.
Now that the deal is official, I expect the NFL to get the contract very soon, if they have not already, and give their approval or disapproval.
The original extension that was voided had language tied to Mickey Loomis. Hopefully this deal avoids such language and the league will approve the deal rather quickly -- although, as we've seen over the last year, anything is possible.
