East St. John High returns to full day of class Monday

Updated:

Laplace, La. - For the first time since Hurricane Isaac flooded their school, East St. John High students will return to a full day of classes at a temporary campus.

While crews made repairs to the Laplace school, students attended classes at Leon Godchaux.

The number of classrooms there was smaller, which forced students to use a platoon system.

"We believe that despite the hardships that the district has faced, we have maintained a high level of academics. However, returning to a normal school day at ALL schools will assist us in continuing our recovery," explains Superintendent Herbert Smith, "One particular example is the district's limiting of field trips and after-school tutoring due to the strain on the bus fleet as a result of East St. John High School's platoon schedule. Returning to ‘normal' will allow teachers across the district to again provide learning experiences outside of the school day."

To accommodate all of the students on the Leon Godchaux campus at one time the district has added 25 portable buildings at the site.

The St. John Parish School System added 10 days to the end of the school year in order to make up for the days students missed after the storm.

Students will attend classes Monday from 7 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.
