Los Angeles, Calif.- Hours after a young Louisiana actress landed a best actress Oscar nomination, 9-year-old Quvenzhane Wallis walked away with the Critics Choice Award for best young actress for her performance in Beasts of the Southern Wild.

The fourth-grader from Houma smiled on the red carpet at last night's awards ceremony in Los Angeles.

She's in the glare of the Hollywood spotlight now that she has become the youngest female ever nominated in the Academy's best actress category for her portrayal of "Hushpuppy" in the film distributed by FOX Searchlight.

Still, she has some down to earth concerns back home. While in California, she missed a social studies test which she'll have to make up when she returns to class next week.
