Man charged in Letten threats had served time

Updated:

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A Baton Rouge man charged with threatening to murder former New Orleans U.S. Attorney Jim Letten and his family served nearly 20 years for the 1988 manslaughter of his 10-year-old daughter.

Gerald Estrade, 56, faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of threatening a former federal law enforcement officer.

The Advocate says Estrade's daughter, Melissa, was reported missing in August 1988. Her body was discovered in December 1988 in the woods in southern Mississippi.

Details about the manslaughter case were revealed in court records made public Friday.

The records say Letten met Estrade in 1999 or 2001 while Letten walked his dog and they talked briefly.

Estrade allegedly told the FBI that Letten caused him problems over a threatening letter Estrade wrote in 2005 or 2006.
