Tangipahoa Parish, La - Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop L are investigating an accident that left two people dead. The accident occurred Sunday around 6:30 p.m. on Interstate 55 northbound near mile post 23. The victims are identified as 23-year-old Brandon Hampton of Clinton, Ms and 23-year-old Amanda Booker of Jackson, Ms.
According to police, the Hampton was driving an SUV northbound on Interstate 55 when for unknown reasons, the vehicle veered to the left and struck an 18-wheeler that was also traveling northbound. Hampton overcorrected to the right which caused the vehicle leave the roadway and flip over, before landing into a canal, submerging it in five feet of water. Both Hampton and Booker, who was a passenger in the SUV were trapped and unable to escape. They were both pronounced dead on the scene.
The driver of the 18-wheeler, Steven Dardar, 47, of Houma, was wearing his seat belt and received no injuries. He submitted to a breath alcohol test and showed no signs of impairment.
The accident remains under investigation. An autopsy will be performed on Hampton and Booker to determine the exact cause of the deaths.
