Fazende: Good promotion for Kromer; tough position for Payton

When Aaron Kromer's six games as ‘interim, interim head coach' were up, I was concerned his 2-4 record would scare off teams considering him for a head coaching job.

Fortunately it didn't.

While he didn't get a head coaching job, he did get the offensive coordinator position with the Chicago Bears, a significant promotion from his offensive line coach duties with the Saints. The hire clearly shows Kromer is still well-regarded in NFL coaching circles.

The Saints will miss him but it's a well-deserved promotion for Kromer who was put in a very difficult situation and despite his record kept the team together when it could've gone bad. He handed a steadily-improving team back to Joe Vitt for the final ten games of the season.

With his departure though, the Saints have a pretty significant opening in their coaching staff to fill. Not only must Sean Payton find a qualified coach but as of right now, he'll have to wait until after the Super Bowl to start interviewing.

Clearly, this would put him at a disadvantage in finding a good coach for that crucial position. Remember Kromer didn't just coach the offensive line; he was the run game coordinator as well.

There will be plenty of qualified coaches. But I'll be interested to see who's left in the pool if Payton can't have contact until February 4th.
