A tanker truck collided with a pickup truck on the Claiborne Avenue bridge in the 9th Ward Wednesday evening, caught fire and prompted worries about a potential gasoline explosion before firefighters put out the blaze.

It happened shortly before 6:30 p.m.  New Orleans police report the tanker truck was traveling west on the bridge, coming in from Chalmette, when its brakes malfunctioned.  It struck a pickup truck at the bottom of the bridge.

"The tanker truck went off to the side, striking a utility pole and went up into flames," reads a statement from NOPD.

The truck came to rest at Claiborne and Poland.  The New Orleans Fire Department rushed to the scene and quickly brought the fire under control.  Police blocked off traffic in the area.  It's believed the truck was carrying a large load of gasoline, but that has not been confirmed.

"The driver of the tanker truck is being transported to the hospital at this time with non-life threatening injuries," the NOPD statement continues.  "The passenger of the pick-up truck was complaining of injuries to her wrist, but it is not known if she has been transported to the hospital at this time."

The westbound side of the Claiborne Ave. bridge was closed for several hours before authorities removed the wreckage from the intersection.
