Hammond woman dies in early morning fire

Updated:

Tangipahoa Parish, La.- Firefighters responded to a mobile home fire in the 19000 block of Lincoln Lane in Hammond around 6:45 a.m. Saturday.

Authorities say 51-year-old Sonya Richardson's remains were discovered in the bedroom.

Investigators determined the fire started in the home's kitchen near the cook top and exhaust system.  While the investigation remains ongoing, investigators do not suspect arson or criminal activity.

The Tangipahoa Parish Coroner's Office has scheduled an autopsy to determine Richardson's exact cause of death.

Investigators determined the mobile home was equipped with smoke alarms; however, were unable to determine if the alarms were functional at the time of the fire.

State Fire Marshal Butch Browning urges all Louisiana citizens to frequently test their home's smoke alarms to ensure they are functioning properly.

This fire remains under investigation.
