Slidell, La.- Investigators believe a discarded cigarette in a bedroom trashcan caused an apartment building fire in the 4800 block of Pontchartrain Drive Saturday.
Firefighters with the St. Tammany Fire District No.1 responded to the fire around 11 a.m. and discovered smoke coming from the Sea Oats Townhouse Apartments.
One building with seven units had smoke coming from an upstairs bedroom window where firefighters were able to extinguish the fire within five minutes of arriving on the scene.
The tenant in the apartment was not home at the time of the fire, but tenants in the adjacent apartments were alerted by the sound of smoke detectors going off in the apartment.
All of the other tenants were able to safely evacuate their apartments.
Investigators say the 1100 square-foot apartment received heavy fire damage to one upstairs bedroom and light smoke damage throughout the rest of the apartment.
No injuries were reported.
