New Orleans, La - Homicide Detectives with the New Orleans Police Department booked a man for what they believe is the final murder of 2012 in New Orleans. Keric Mealy, 23, was charged with the second-degree murder of 21-year-old Jared Haynes. The incident occurred during the afternoon of December 31st near the intersection of North Dorgenois and Mazant Street. Haynes was found on scene suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Detective Andrew Waldron learned during his investigation that Mealy and Haynes were involved in an ongoing dispute.
Police say that Mealy is currently serving time in the Orlean's Parish Criminal Sheriff's Weekend Warrior Program for an attempted purse snatching that occurred in October.
"This suspect is like many other criminals in the respect that his crimes were not limited to dealing narcotics and snatching purses. This man was also apparently capable of committing murder", said Superintendent Ronal Serpas. "I want to commend Detective Waldron for his work as well as the people of New Orleans who came to our investigators, told them what they knew about this killing and played an integral role in making this arrest happen."
