Sean Payton reinstated by the NFL

New Orleans, La - New Orleans Saints Head Coach Sean Payton has been reinstated by the NFL. The announcement was made by the team on Tuesday.

The Saints released the following statement from Payton:

I am thankful today Commissioner Goodell has granted me reinstatement. As I stated back in March, " I, along with Mickey Loomis, take full responsibility for all aspects of our football program."

I clearly recognize that mistakes were made, which led to league violations.

Furthermore, I have assured the Commissioner a more diligent protocol will be followed.

Lastly, I feel we have learned from our mistakes and are ready to move forward. I want to thank our owner, Mr. Benson and all of our great fans for the overwhelming support throughout this past year.

I am excited to be back as Head Coach of the New Orleans Saints!

Sean Payton

Saints owner Tom Benson released the following statement on the reinstatement of Payton:

We are all thankful that Sean Payton has been reinstated. We have a lot of work to do and we are in the middle of it right now.

He is our head coach and we welcome him back.

We look forward to a great 2013 season and making another run at a World Championship for our fans!

The following is a statement from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell:

"Coach Payton acknowledged in the meeting his responsibility for the actions of his coaching staff and players and pledged to uphold the highest standards of the NFL and ensure that his staff and players do so as well," Goodell said in a statement. "Sean fully complied with all the requirements imposed on him during his suspension.

"More important, it is clear that Sean understands and accepts his responsibilities as a head coach and the vital role that coaches play in promoting player safety and setting an example for how the game should be played at all levels."

FOOTBALL This 7-9 business won't work again on Airline Drive. You finish with that mark four years in a row, and Drew Brees will be gone after the 2017 season. Vegas has the Saints over/under on wins at 8, so the bettors think they'll stay close to that 7-9 record. Will they finish at .500, or under again as they did in 2014-16, I can't give you a definitive answer on that. No Dannell Ellerbe this season, and the offensive line missing Terron Armstead and Max Unger for cam...

David Onyemata In 2016, the Saints drafted two defensive tackles: Sheldon Rankins and David Onyemata. The injury to Nick Fairley has put that haul into complete focus this season. The expectations for Rankins are high but the development of Onyemata could be almost as important.  He has the athleticism and versatility to be an effective defensive lineman. The question is has he developed enough to step into a more prominent role? The Saints sure hope so.  Hau’Oli Ki...more>>
