NOPD officer shot in New Orleans East early Sunday

New Orleans, La.- New Orleans Police arrested 41-year-old Damon Jones in connection to the shooting of an officer that occurred Sunday shortly before 2 a.m. in a parking lot in the 7000 block of Bullard Avenue.

Officers responded to a call of a man causing a disturbance inside the Brother's Food Mart and,  upon arrival, a man was observed walking from the store who fit the description of the subject said to be causing the disturbance.

Before officers could approach the man, he immediately began walking towards them in a non-compliant combative manner.  The officers attempted to interview the man when he became more agitated and therefore was placed in handcuffs for the officers' safety.

Investigators say as the officers attempted to place the man into the police car, he continued resisting and at some point reached over and grabbed the officer's gun from his holster, pulling the trigger in the process.

The officer sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was transported to the hospital listed in good condition.

Investigators determined that this man was the same person causing the disturbance inside the store and police are in the process of determining the man's true identity as he remains uncooperative.

Police say the man will be booked with disturbing the peace, resisting arrest and aggravated battery on a police officer.
