According to NFL.com's Gil Brandt, the Saints have two frontrunners for their vacant defensive coordinator position: Romeo Crennel and Rob Ryan.

FOX 8 Sports has been unable to confirm this, but if it's indeed accurate, the former has been my frontrunner for the job all along. The latter would be an interesting choice.

Since the day Sean Payton announced he was looking for a 3-4 coach, Crennel seemed to be the logical choice. He's a part of the Bill Parcells/Bill Belichick coaching tree and at age 65, his head coaching days are likely done.

Plus, he has a proven résumé. He was the Patriots defensive coordinator from 2001-2004. In 2003, the Patriots had the best scoring defense. In 2004, they were ranked second in that category. Yes, Belichick was truly the mastermind behind all those schemes and he deservedly gets most of the credit.  But don't tell me that four years of learning from one of the best didn't rub off on Crennel.

Conversely, Ryan is the twin brother of Jets head coach Rex Ryan and son of legendary coach Buddy Ryan -- the same Buddy Ryan whom former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams called his mentor.  Ryan, like Williams and Rex, also has the ultra-bravado and is unafraid to talk trash about an opponent.

Plus, the elder Ryan was the architect of the infamous Bounty Bowl, when he was head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles on Thanksgiving Day back in 1989.

Maybe it's just me, but it that seems to be too many connections to bad memories.

But as I've learned and said many times before, particularly this season and offseason, at this point, nothing surprises me.

Stay tuned.
