An accident on the southbound bridge of the Pontchartrain Causeway brought traffic in both directions to a halt and sent a vehicle into the water.

Causeway Police got a call around 5:08 p.m. Wednesday from a northbound driver that a truck was on fire on the southbound bridge, about four and a half miles from the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain.

Causeway Commission general manager Carlton Dufrechou confirms that a vehicle went into the water, knocking some railing off the bridge.  Emergency responders, including airborne and waterborne units, rushed to the scene of the crash and eventually spotted the submerged vehicle.  However, they were not able to determine whether the driver of the truck made it out of the vehicle.

Officials told FOX 8 News Wednesday night that they suspect the driver died in the crash, and that they will attempt to pull the truck to the surface after Thursday morning's commute.

It is not clear what caused the accident, whether other vehicles were involved or how many people were in the truck that fell into the water.

Both northbound and southbound traffic was blocked on the Causeway, but northbound lanes were reopened a short time before 6:00 p.m.  The southbound bridge reopened around 9:45 p.m., as search and rescue efforts were suspended for the evening.
