METAIRIE, La. (AP) - Authorities continue to search for the body of a dump truck driver whose vehicle caught fire and veered off of the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway and plunged into the water. The truck went over the side of the southbound span about 4 1/2 miles from the Metairie side at around 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Bridge General Manager Carlton Dufrechou said the truck's owner identified the driver and confirmed that only one person should have been inside the vehicle at the time of the accident.
Dufrechou said authorities discovered diesel fuel on the bridge and also spotted a pattern of marks, which led investigators to believe a tire on the truck possibly blew out.
The truck was pulled from the lake Thursday, but the driver's body was not in the cab.
