Lucedale man charged with theft of monkey

LUCEDALE, Miss. (AP) - An investigation that originated in Mobile, Ala., and centered on a stolen Ringtail Lemur, or ringtail monkey, has ended this week in George County, Miss.

Sheriff Dean Howell says in a news release that James Edward Welborn Jr. of Lucedale is charged with monkey theft. He is being held in Mobile County.

Howell says the family pet is valued at $1,500 and was taken during a Mobile burglary in January.

The monkey, named Gizmo, is two years old.

Howell says the owner of the monkey had offered a cash reward and once that information was released, someone who had seen the monkey contacted the Mobile County Sheriff's Office.

Howell says the suspect was arrested after he contacted the monkey's owner with information on its whereabouts and sought the reward.
