FOX 8 received this news release from the U.S. Coast Guard Sunday afternoon:
The Coast Guard medevaced a 46-year-old male passenger aboard a cruise ship approximately 60 miles south of Southwest Pass in the Gulf of Mexico, Saturday.
Watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector New Orleans command center received a report at approximately 6:30 p.m. that the Carnival Conquest required a medevac for a man reportedly suffering from symptoms associated with a brain hemorrhage.
Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans launched an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew to the ship at approximately 8 p.m. The crew successfully hoisted the man from the ship. A nurse accompanied the patient on board, and the man was brought to West Jefferson Hospital where a cardiologist and neurologist would be available.
"Our standardized training is the bedrock for everything we are and do as Coast Guardsmen, and it allowed us to efficiently and successfully complete the medevac," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Nick Litchfield, aviation survival technician for Air Station Orleans. "Expedience and excellence were critical to assisting this patient's potentially serious condition."
His condition is unknown.
