Xavier Prep High School to close after 98 years

Updated:

New Orleans, La. - Xavier University Prep High School will close its doors after 98 years at the end of this school year.

The announcement came Wednesday Night from the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, who runs the school.

They say the school's finances show it doesn't have "a financially sustainable future."

Archbishop Gregory Aymond and Jan Lancaster, Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of New Orleanas released a joint statement expressing sadness and surprise at the decision.

It says in part while Xavier Prep "is not owned or operated by the archdiocese of new orleans, we did offer financial resources to the sisters, but the sisters, while grateful, declined our offer."

The statement also says the Archdiocese will help students find new schools.

A meeting to start that process is scheduled for Thursday.
