(Fox News) The Food and Drug Administration approves a first-of-its-kind breast cancer medication that targets tumor cells while sparing healthy ones.

Kadcyla combines the drug Herceptin with a powerful chemotherapy drug and a third chemical that links them together.

Cancer researchers say the drug may offer a clear advantage over older drugs because it delivers more medication with fewer side effects.

The FDA approved the treatment for breast cancer patients with tumors that overproduce a protein known as HER2.

This type of breast cancer is typically more aggressive and less responsive to hormone therapy.

The recipients must also have been treated previously with Herceptin and the chemotherapy drug Taxane.

Kadcyla is expected to be available in the U.S. within two weeks.
