Serpas: NOPD officer in serious condition

New Orleans, La.- A NOPD officer was shot Saturday morning in the 1100 block of Poland Avenue while responding to a robbery inside the Dollar General store.

The shooting happened around 7:15 a.m.

Chief Ronal Serpas says the NOPD officer responded to the store regarding a disturbance call. When the officer entered the store, the suspect fired several shots and wounded the officer.

Investigators believe the suspect fled immediately after shooting towards the City down St. Claude.

The injured officer has been identified as John Passaro.

Police have not released details at this time of where the Passaro was wounded, but say he is listed in serious condition.

Chief Serpas describes the suspect as a black male in his 30s or 40s, about 5'7" and was last seen wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans with a hat and blue and white bandanna.

Police and SWAT Team officers have closed off a large area of the St. Claude neighborhood and advise residents who live in the area to remain inside their homes until authorities have completed a full search of the area.

A JPSO helicopter is also on the scene to assist with search efforts.
