Elderly man attacked in New Orleans East after taking out trash

Victim attacked Tuesday night Victim attacked Tuesday night

An elderly New Orleans East man is recovering after being attacked in his home Tuesday night by two gunmen.

It happened in the 4800 block of Virgilian Street. The 75-year-old victim, whom we're choosing not to identify, says he had just come in from putting his trash can on the curb at around 9:30 when two gunmen burst in.

The victim says, "They came in the house looking for money. They beat me up, trying to make me tell I had money. I told them I don't have any money, all my money is in the bank."

The victim says the men fired three shots in the house, trying to scare him, all the while beating him with their fists and guns. He suffered a laceration down the side of his head and his ear required three stitches.

"I never got scared one minute and I told them go ahead and kill me. If you want to kill me, go ahead and kill me and I looked them right straight in the eye," the victim remembers.

The gunmen finally stopped beating the victim and made off with his shotgun.

Residents on Virgilian Street had no idea Wednesday, what had happened to their friend. Ralph Saunders says, "I was shocked to hear that, that someone would rob an old man taking out the trash. It's pretty scary, you know."

Saunders and his neighbors try to look out for the victim and the other elderly residents on the street. But there's only so much they can do.

"We're concerned about what's going on but these youngsters today, they don't care about life. I don't understand it," resident Lawrence Ewell said.

Bandages cover the victim's arms and head.  He told us he is angry about being attacked, saying, "Quite naturally you ain't the same man you used to be.  And they take advantage of us."

The victim says the description of the suspects matches the description his brother-in-law gave police when he was robbed in the same neighborhood last year. "I just think we got the bad of the bad in our neighborhood and I really firmly believe that they lived in that neighborhood," the victim said.  Now he's hoping the police catch the men and put them behind bars.

The victim describes his attackers as African-American. He says one is about 6 feet tall and thin and the other is about 5 feet 7 and stocky. Both were wearing bandanas over their faces.

The NOPD says it's following every lead on this case. If you have any information on this crime, please call Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.  You could be eligible for a cash reward.
