Arrest made in high-profile carjacking, shooting case

New Orleans, La. - A man arrested for a high-profile carjacking and attempted murder has a long rap sheet.

Detectives picked up 20-year-old Byron Johnson Thursday at his home in New Orleans East.

Investigators say Johnson shot a man as he sat in his driveway in the 3400 block of Camp Street in October 2012. As the victim lay there bleeding, police say, Johnson and two others went into the victim's home, stole several items and  took off in the victim's car.

Johnson is no stranger to the criminal justice system. He's been arrested more than 20 times and described as possible career criminal.

Johnson, though, has spent very little time in jail. In two separate cases, he was convicted of carrying a weapon and both times, he was given a suspended sentence.

In other cases, the DA's office refused the charges. Some were refused because of a lack of evidence.

"We've been criticized because we accept more cases than any other DA's office in the country. I want to continue to do that, but I want to make sure we have a chance to convict the person. You can't just accept a charge because the police make an arrest. We do have to evaluate the case and this was one of those cases where I just didn't have enough evidence to go forward," says Orleans District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro.

Johnson was also on probation when he was arrested for the carjacking and attempted murder.

Police say they are still investigating this case and expect to make more arrests soon.
