St. Bernard sheriff's deputy injured during chase

Chalmette, La. - A St. Bernard deputy fired his weapon Thursday morning at a suspect after a traffic stop and chase.

Sheriff Jimmy Pohlmann says after being corned by cops, the suspect pulled out a gun and the officer opened fire.

The incident ended at Liberaux Street and Paris Road.

The sheriff says around 8:30am, a deputy stopped the suspect, but he refused to get out of his car and then sped off crashing into another deputy's vehicle on Paris Road.

No one was hurt as a result of the gunfire, but a deputy and the suspect both suffered injuries in the car crash.

The sheriff's office says the suspect tossed the gun and later an automatic weapon was found in a junk yard nearby. Investigators are looking into whether it was stolen.

The name of the suspect hasn't been released, but the sheriff says he has a lengthy criminal record including gun and drug charges.
