NEW YORK, March 14, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA) announces the winners of its annual writing awards, honoring outstanding nonfiction produced on a freelance basis.  Judges from the membership of ASJA select the winners from among several hundred submissions every year.

In addition to four categories of book awards and eight categories of article awards, ASJA bestows several endowed prizes. These are:

The June Roth Award for Medical Journalism to "A Mind in Danger" by Victoria Costello (Scientific American Mind). Maryn McKenna's Superbug is the winner of the June Roth Medical Book Award

The Arlene Awards honor works that make a documented difference by inspiring action that has a positive impact on the community, society, or the world. This year the honorees are The Seed Underground by Janisse Ray, and My Orange Duffel Bag by Sam Bracken (brought to life by Echo Garrett).

The Donald Robinson Memorial Award for Investigative Journalism is given to outstanding works of reportage.  "The Truth About the Fast and Furious Scandal" by Katherine Eban (Fortune) is this year's first place winner.

The ASJA Extraordinary Service Award goes, posthumously, to Grace W. Weinstein whose decades of service to ASJA ran the gamut from president to board member, to longtime volunteer and treasurer of the Writers Emergency Assistance Fund.

More information and the full list of honorees is available at:  http://asja.org/for-writers/annual-writing-awards/2013winners.php.  The awards will be presented on Thursday, April 25, at an evening gala at the Roosevelt Hotel, part of ASJA's 42nd Annual Writers Conference. The event is open to the public.

Founded in 1948, ASJA is the professional association of independent nonfiction writers. Its more than 1200 members have met exacting standards for professional achievement.
