Gretna family relates to family of missing teacher

New Orleans-- The family of a young teacher who went missing nearly two decades ago gathered Saturday to pray for Terrilynn Monette.  The Shonette McPherson Foundation for Domestic Violence organized the gathering on the levee in Gretna.  They prayed for information in Monette's case and handed out fliers with the 26-year-old teacher's picture on it.  The situation is all too real for McPherson's family, who feels compelled to help in the effort.

It's been 15 days since Monette was last seen, and for Tandra Taylor, the heart-wrenching feeling of not knowing is all too real.  "We know exactly what this family is going through first hand.. from a mother's standpoint and from a sister's standpoint.  We know exactly what this family is going through," said Taylor.

Hearing the news of Monette, Taylor explained she immediately thought of her sister, Shonette McPherson, who went missing on Thanksgiving morning in 1996.  McPherson was 25-years-old and also a teacher. Her family remembers the everyday search efforts and the emotions 17 years ago.  They're reliving all of that with the news of Monette.

Taylor said her sister went missing from her Gretna apartment.  She wasn't found until two months later, in the English Turn area.

Taylor says McPherson's ex-boyfriend confessed to police that he abducted and murdered her. She's praying Monette's family has a different outcome.  "By it actually being on the news everyday.. day in and day out.. I immediately called my mom, and then she was saying we have to do something to help this family," said Taylor.

They're reaching out to anyone and everyone, hoping to find answers for Monette's family. Monette's car, a 2012 black two-door Honda Accord is also missing.  The license plate is WUN 494.

The NOPD says Equusearch, the volunteer search crew out of Texas, plans to use a new boat in its search of Monette in Bayou St. John on Monday.
