Mom burned daughter for resisting arranged marriage

A Florida mom is facing three counts of child abuse after police say she burned her daughter with a hot knife for resisting an arranged marriage according to Fox

Sahar Thabit, a 35-year-old devout Muslim, put a knife on a hot stove and used it to burn her 17-year-old daughter several times in January, according to Hollywood police.

Police began investigating the alleged incidents after one of the daughter's classmates said she saw burn marks on the girl's arms, CBS 4 reports.

The girl was expected to marry a cousin in the family, but she was communicating with another boy over the Internet.

Ali Thabit, the girl's grandfather, claims the burnings were accidental since the house they live in has an oven, 7 News reports.

Sahar Thabit was arrested Friday and released Saturday after posting bond, but she has been ordered to avoid contact with her daughter, who is staying with family friends.
