New Orleans Adolescent Hospital slated to reopen

New Orleans, La. - The New Orleans Adolescent Hospital will re-open according to a state lawmaker.

Representative Neil Abramson made the announcement Thursday at city hall.

NOAH, as the hospital is called, was shuttered by the state in 2009 and its inpatient beds moved to a Mandeville facility and outpatient services displaced as well.

But Representative Abramson says Children' Hospital will reopen it as part of a deal struck with the state.

"I went to Children's Hospital, which is another great community partner, and asked them if they could come together collectively, collaboratively to see if we could figure out a solution to the mental health needs in our community for the children and adolescents," said Abramson.

Before Katrina, NOAH was the city's primary mental health care site for youth.

Abramson says a lot of details are still being worked out, but he hopes the hospital can reopen at its old site sometime next year.
