NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A Wisconsin congressman is supporting a former New Orleans police officer's bid to be freed from prison pending a retrial on charges he shot and killed a man outside a strip mall in Hurricane Katrina's aftermath.

In a letter dated March 11, Rep. Reid Ribble urged U.S. District Judge Lance Africk to set bond for David Warren, a Wisconsin native who was convicted in 2010 of fatally shooting 31-year-old Henry Glover without justification.

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ordered a retrial for Warren in December, ruling he should have been tried separately from four other officers charged in Glover's 2005 death.

Ribble visited Warren in a South Carolina prison. The Republican congressman says in his letter that Warren is regarded as a "law-abiding citizen" and devoted family man.
