Mezzo soprano Bonita Nahoum Jaros and pianist Inessa Khurgel Rozenovich will present a stirring musical concert tribute in remembrance of the Holocaust at the Merage Jewish Community Center on Thursday April 4 at 7:00 p.m.

This musical dramatization follows Rivka and Leah’s musical journey. The two survivors, who became friends in the Auschwitz-Birkenau Women’s Orchestra, meet again on a ship bound for British-mandated Palestine. During their reunion, they remember friends and the pledge they made to each other to bear witness through music. Thirty years later, Rivka and Leah are living in Tel Aviv. Still close friends and true to the promise they made to each other, they are preparing a concert for a local high school. Songs range from Yiddish, to Hungarian, to Hebrew, to Greek, to Ladino.

Bonita Nahoum Jaros and Inessa Khurgel Rozenovich, have created this original concert-show that tells the story of those who sang and played and the effect it had on them and others in the ghettos and camps. It is not widely known that music played a role during the Shoah. From the ghettos to the death camps, music was composed, sung and played formally and informally. Trained musicians and persons who knew not one note of music sang and played under the direst of circumstances. And what was their purpose? …To ease the soul, to create community, to create resilience for survival. The performance shows and tells the story of those who sang and played and the effect it had on them and others in the ghettos and camps. It is a testament to the human spirit.

Dr. Marilyn J. Harran, Professor and Director of the Rodgers Center for Holocaust Education at Chapman University will introduce the program with a few remarks.
