National Doctors Day is an opportunity to recognize the dedication of physicians who care for America’s patients.

March 30 is the date designated for recognizing the physicians in the United States for their hard work and commitment to the health and well-being of patients. The American Board of Physician Specialties® (ABPS) encourages each American to observe National Doctors Day and recognize the dedication of their own physician.

“Physicians share uniquely personal relationships with their patients,” said A. Robert Cerrato, DO, JD, president of the American Association of Physician Specialists, Inc.® (AAPS), the governing body of ABPS. “Patients spend several life-changing and milestone moments with their doctors,” he said.

Events ranging from making elderly loved ones comfortable to welcoming newborns into the world, or even the occasional broken bone and illness in between, help define the doctor’s role in each person’s life.

March 30 is the date for National Doctors Day because it is the anniversary of the first use of general anesthetic in surgery dating back to 1842. Although the first observance of Doctors Day was in 1933, it was proclaimed a national day of celebration beginning in 1991 by President George H.W. Bush.
