Local news icon, Alec Gifford, dies


New Orleans, La.- Alec Gifford passed away Friday at the age of 85, WDSU reports.

Gifford worked in the news business for 51 years and retired from WDSU in December 2006, according to an article on NOLA.com.

During his career, Gifford left New Orleans in 1966 for about one year to work for NBC News in New York, according to NOLA.com.

Gifford then returned to New Orleans and worked for WVUE as news director, anchor and reporter for 13 years.

In 2005, the New Orleans Press Club honored Gifford for marking 50 years in his television news career.
