Bogalusa, La. - The Washington Parish Sheriff's Office arrested former Bogalusa Clerk of Court Helen Cotton on a warrant issued by the Louisiana Department of Justice.
Cotton was placed in the Washington Parish Jail on March 21st and released on a $15,000 bond.
Cotton is accused of Felony Theft in the amount of $7,650; 8 counts of Injuring Public Records; and 5 counts of Filing False Public Records.
All offenses are related to her former employment with the City Court of Bogalusa. Cotton was employed by the City Court of Bogalusa for approximately 18 years and resigned her position in November 2011. The specific offenses for which she is charged allegedly occurred from 2006 – 2011 during which time she served as Clerk of Court.
Cotton had the primary responsibility for the cash bond deposits, preparing the Cash Bond List and was the only person who could write checks on this account to transfer funds to the Court's Fine Bank Account. Cotton was the Clerk of Court who was responsible for the funds during the period involved in the apparent theft of the cash bond amounts.
