Man arrested for pot turns out to be escaped inmate

New Orleans, La -- A man arrested for marijuana possession on Thursday turned out to be an escapee from the Orleans Parish jail, according to a Sheriff's Office spokesman.

At the time of his arrest, suspect Rubin Martin, 43, was using the name Lee Wise Martin, police said. He had been jailed on simple burglary charges when he escaped the OPSO's Temporary Housing Center in October.

Police said Martin had changed his appearance, including growing facial hair and losing weight, in order to avoid detection. His true identity was discovered through the OPSO's standard series of background checks and ID verification.

Martin is now in OPSO custody awaiting trial on charges of third-offense possession of marijuana, simple escape and criminal damage to property greater than $500, in addition to his original charge of simple burglary.
