Firemen battle two weekend house fires in Slidell

(St. Tammany Fire District #1) (St. Tammany Fire District #1)

Slidell, La.- The St. Tammany Fire District #1 responded to two separate residential fires in the Slidell area this weekend.

The first happened on Good Friday in the 2700 block of Lincoln Avenue just after 1 a.m.   Firefighters arrived on the scene and discovered smoke and flames coming from a single story home, as well as an attached shed.

Investigators say the occupant had been sleeping, and awoke to the smell of smoke, discovered the fire and called 911.  Officials say the fire appears to have started in the attached shed and spread to the house.

The second happened late Saturday night in the 59000 block of Carroll Road.   Firefighters discovered smoke and flames coming from another single story home.

Officials say the owners were gone at the time of the fire.

Firefighters were able to rescue a dog and a cat from the residence.  However, two other dogs and a cat perished as a result of injuries sustained from the intense heat and smoke.

Investigators believe this fire started in the kitchen and say there was heavy fire damage to the kitchen and moderate smoke damage to the rest of the home.

The cause of both fires remains under investigation and no injuries were reported.
