BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Republican U.S. Rep. John Fleming says he won't enter the U.S. Senate race against Democratic incumbent Mary Landrieu because he doesn't want to divide GOP support.

Fleming's announcement Thursday comes after his colleague Republican U.S. Rep. Bill Cassidy jumped into the race earlier this week.

Fleming, a doctor from Minden, says the top priority is ousting Landrieu. He says to enter the race would risk a contest between two Republicans and threaten the ability to defeat the Democratic incumbent.

So far, Cassidy is the only announced Republican for the Senate election next year.

Though other GOP contenders have been eyeing the race, Republican U.S. Sen. David Vitter issued a statement saying Fleming's decision makes it clear that Cassidy will be the single major conservative in the Senate race.
