Delgado workers brace for layoffs

New Orleans, La. -

Staff at Delgado Community College are facing the prospect of layoffs in coming weeks.

Chancellor Monty Sullivan sent some details in an e-mail to all staff members this week.  It spelled out plans for layoffs to take effect at the end of next month, and said that faculty and unclassified employees would be affected.

The chancellor's email did not give details as to how many Delgado employees could be terminated.

Sullivan blamed the cuts on problems with state funding and increases in operating costs.  Just two months ago, a school spokesman announced Delgado needs to layoff about 10 percent of its workforce to manage a $13 million budget deficit.
