Lafitte museum opens on Saturday

Updated:

JEAN LAFITTE, La. (AP) - Officials of the town of Jean Lafitte in Jefferson Parish will formally open the Barataria Museum and Wetlands Trace on Saturday.

The 6,000-square-foot museum chronicles the 200-year history of Jean Lafitte, a fishing village about 20 miles southwest of New Orleans named after the buccaneer and hero of the War of 1812.

A multimedia theatre presentation and nature trail follow the life of Lafitte, a pirate whose support at the Battle of New Orleans in January 1815 was critical to the American victory over a British army.

The museum also touches on stories and folk traditions of the wetlands as well as coastal erosion and natural and man-made disasters.
