Fire ants on the march in spring


BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - LSU AgCenter experts say April is the time for neighborhoods and communities to get together to fight fire ants.

And the Mississippi State University extension service says spring is also the time for farmers to fight fire ant infestations in pastures.

Experts say the most effective treatment is baits that don't affect beneficial insects. Ants forage for food, pick up bait and bring it to the nest to feed other ants. Eventually, the chemical finds its way to the queen.

LSU entomologist Linda Hooper-Bui says treating just one yard leaves it open to re-invasion but treating large areas can help eliminate existing colonies.

MSU experts say farmers treating pastures or hayfields must buy bait safe for use around grazing animals and have a spreader that will apply it properly.
