Call for Lafourche president's resignation falls flat

Updated:

Mathews, La. - A push to demand the resignation of Lafourche Parish's president didn't get very far at council Tuesday evening.

Three council members refused to even be in the room if the council took a vote.  Three other members, Jerry Jones, Daniel Lorraine and Jerry Lafont, originally backed the measure asking for Charlotte Randolph to resign.

The resolution came after the State Ethics Board recently fined Randolph for renting her camp to BP workers in 2010 while the company was cleaning up oil in Lafourche Parish.

Councilmen Joe Fertitta, Mike Delatte and John Arnold all excused themselves from council chambers when the measure came up for a vote.

"This is a resolution that has no force of law and I will not participate in even validating this with a vote," said Fertitta. "I'm walking out, I'll be absent."

The motion to ask for Randolph's resignation then died when Jones asked to remove it from consideration..

Randolph didn't comment on the discussion at the meeting but council members offered her support.

"It would be a real bad idea to get rid of one of the best parish presidents that this parish has seen in some time," said Arnold. "It would also be very detrimental if we lost our parish president right at the beginning of hurricane season when she's done one hell of a job."

Randolph is appealing the $60,000 fine assessed by the ethics board.
