Central City fire displaces 38 people

New Orleans, La. - An early morning fire leaves 38 residents of a Central City apartment complex displaced.

A spokesman with the New Orleans Fire Department says the fire started around 6:45am in the 1800 block of Magnolia Street at the Magnolia Villas apartment complex.

Firefighters evacuated 38 residents and traced the origin of the fire to a mattress in one of the apartments.

Sprinklers contained the fire to that apartment but the entire building sustained water and smoke damage.

The resident of the apartment of origin was taken to a local hospital for smoke inhalation.  The other residents were evacuated due to heavy water damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.  There were no other reported injuries.
