Early-morning crash leaves Kenner man dead

New Orleans, La - Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop B are investigating a fatal accident that left a Kenner man dead. The accident occurred Sunday, just after 2:00 a.m. on I-10 east at Cleary Avenue. The victim has been identified as 50-year-old Mauricio Vega.

Police say that Vega was driving a car on I-10 east bound when his vehicle broke down in the left lane. Vega exited the vehicle and popped the hood. A car driven by 19-year-old Erik Francois of Laplace was also traveling east in the left-hand lane. As Francois approached Cleary Avenue, he attempted to swerve and miss Vega's car but was unsuccessful. Francois's car struck the back of Vega's car and Vega.

A semi truck, driven by 44-year-old Edward Wiggins of Charlotte, North Carolina was also traveling east on I-10. As he approached the accident, Wiggins attempted to swerve to miss Vega's and Francois's cars, but was unsuccessful. Wiggins's truck struck the rear of both vehicles.

Mauricio Vega was pronounced dead on the scene. Wiggins only sustained minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital. Francois did not sustain any injuries. It is unknown if Vega was impaired at the time of the crash. Tests showed that Francois had no alcohol in his system. Wiggins submitted a blood sample and results are pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.

The crash remains under investigation.
