Public forum held to discuss police reform in NO

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A public hearing in New Orleans is being held to determine the firm that will oversee the city's compliance with requirements in an agreement to reform the long-troubled police department. Monday's hearing comes even as the city tries to get out of the reform agreement it made last year with the Justice Department.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu's administration says the city cannot afford the potential costs of the police reform pact and a separate agreement governing jail reform.

The jail agreement was between the justice department and Sheriff Marlin Gusman, who runs the city-funded jail.
