New Orleans, La. - A college student from New Orleans was on the marathon route when he heard the explosions Monday afternoon.

Adam Julien is a sophomore at Emmanuel College in Boston. Julian and his friends were about a block away from the finish line when they heard a loud boom and, seconds later, another one.

"We started to walk toward the area to see what happened but then there was a bunch of white smoke everywhere, and then we started seeing people fleeing the area and a lot of responders and cops and ambulances were all starting to come in," he says.

Julien says he and his friends saw people being treated for injuries, many superficial cuts and some more serious wounds.  His group didn't stay near the finish line long -- he says rumors were spreading through the crowd of more explosive devices so police told them they had to leave.

Julien and his friends spent the rest of the day at each others apartments trying to stay out of the way and figure out what was happening.

"A lot of streets are blocked off," he says. "You see a lot of police around. A lot of schools I know are taking the necessary precautions like closing down their fitness centers and gyms and things like that where you don't really have to walk around."

Julien says he was able to call his mother just minutes after the blast to let her know he was okay.
