Mandeville - Authorities on the north shore are investigating a suspicious package discovered outside of a Mandeville post office this morning.

Mandeville police got the call between 6:30 a.m. and 7 a.m. When they arrived at the post office located at 1 St. Ann Drive, they discovered a briefcase in a garbage can near the building.

Authorities used an X-ray machine to look inside the briefcase just before 9:30 a.m., but results came back "inconclusive." Specialized personnel will shoot the briefcase with a shotgun to get a look inside. They warned people nearby that there could be a loud bang.

Investigators evacuated about a dozen employees from the building. Several businesses, including a Walgreens and CVS, were also evacuated as a precaution.

Several streets in the area, near the Causeway approach, have been blocked off, according to Mandeville Police Lt. Gerald Sticker. Police say the Meadowbrook subdivision is the only neighborhood impacted by the road closures.

"Every threat we have to take serious. This may have been an innocent or ignorant lapse in judgment," Sticker said. "Every one of these we have to treat like a serious threat."

There is no word on when the scene will be cleared.
