Hotel renovation expected to lure tourists to North Shore

Covington, La. - A multi-million dollar project on the North Shore could help turn Covington into more of its own tourist destination.

According to our partners at CityBusiness, a renovation of the historic Southern Hotel is part of an effort to create an atmosphere similar to the atmosphere on Magazine Street in New Orleans.

The $7 million renovation will turn the 40-room property into a upscale boutique hotel. Its East Boston Street location is within walking distance of restaurants, a coffee shop and a nightclub.

The St. Tammany Parish Tourist and Convention Commission thinks the combination will turn the area into a weekend getaway destination.

Developers hope to open the hotel by the end of the year.
