NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans Fire Chief Charles Parent is on medical leave and will retire this summer, after 10 years in the position.

A news release from the city did not say what ails the chief, but said he will remain superintendent until a replacement is chosen.

The city has posted the opening on the International Association of Fire Chiefs' website, with a May 24 application deadline.

Parent joined the department in 1982 and became its 10th superintendent in 2003. It has 694 employees, 649 of them firefighters.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu says Parent led the department through some tough times after Hurricane Katrina hit the city in 2005 and continues to build it back stronger.
