New Orleans businessman buys Advocate newspaper

Baton Rouge, La.-  New Orleans businessman John Georges, who is also a former candidate for Louisiana Governor and New Orleans Mayor has bought the Baton Rouge Advocate newspaper.

The announcement was made on the Advocate's website Tuesday evening. It also comes on the same day that the New Orleans Times-Picayune announced that it would add to its weekly publications.

Georges named former Times-Picayune executives to run the paper.  Georges said he will serve as Publisher and he named Dan Shea as General Manager and Peter Kovacs as Editor.

Georges said he will meet Wednesday with the newspaper's 450 employees.

The Manship family of Baton Rouge had owned and operated the newspaper since 1909.

Neither Georges nor the Manship family would give details on the final selling price.
