Slidell, La. - A Picayune man is in jail after police say he robbed a local Slidell gas station.

A spokesman for the Slidell Police Department says 46-year-old Christopher Nelson entered the Stop and Buy gas station at 430 Pontchartrain Drive, approached the check-out counter, and purchased a drink.

When the clerk opened the cash register to give Nelson his change, he reached over the counter and grabbed a handful of twenty-dollar bills.

The clerk fought back and was able to retrieve all but one twenty-dollar bill. Nelson ran out of the door and fled the scene. An alert citizen was able to obtain a license plate number from the white Ford Taurus that Nelson was driving.

Detectives were able to track the license plate back to Nelson, who lived in Picayune, Mississippi. Authorities contacted the Picayune Police Department who were able to track down Nelson at his residence.

Nelson was placed under arrest in Mississippi, and is currently being held at the Picayune Police Department's Jail where he is awaiting extradition back to Louisiana.
