NOPD says crime is up slightly

New Orleans, La. - The New Orleans Police Department says crime overall is up slightly for the first quarter of 2013, due to increases in the number of thefts and burglaries.  But the numbers, which are compared to the first quarter of 2012, show significant decreases in armed robberies, rapes and auto thefts.

The citywide totals show the number of murders stayed about the same.  There were 43 murders recorded in 2013, compared to 45 for the same time a year ago.  That's a 4.4% drop in the number of murder cases.  The biggest decrease was seen in the number of auto thefts, down more than 30% in 2013.
