Local leaders in Washington to protest insurance rate hike

Updated:

New Orleans, La. - Local leaders says a dramatic increase in flood insurance rates slated for next year will be more devastating than any hurricane.

A delegation of leaders from South Louisiana brought that message to Washington this week, with the hope of getting people some relief from a new law.

Leaders from 13 parishes stood united to fight the Biggert Waters Act. The legislation is set to raise flood insurance rates as much as 25 percent for some home and business owners.

For some, flood insurance could increase to somewhere between $19,000 and $28,000.

There's a fear the new flood insurance premiums will devastate parishes throughout Southeast Louisiana.

"It's clearly something the working class individuals cannot afford," says Parish President of St. John Parish Natalie Robottom.

"This not only affects coastal communities in Louisiana, but it will affect communities all over the United States," says Jefferson Parish President John Young.

U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu (D-Louisiana) filed an amendment Tuesday that would halt the insurance increases until FEMA does an affordability study on the matter.

Officials with the National Flood Insurance Program say the increases are designed to keep it afloat.  The program is now over $25 billion in debt, mainly because of payouts from Hurricanes Sandy and Katrina.
